12/28/20 – Weekly Post: The AMA Recognizes the Deleterious Effects of Racism.

I had been doing Social Work in a variety of modalities and settings for about two decades when I began to feel a sense of unease personally and professionally. Something was amiss; it just seemed that so much of what was causing difficulties for the people I came into contact with was systemic. Over time my perspective changed. For one’s mental health to improve people need a basic sense of safety and security: remunerative jobs, reasonable living accommodations, affordable day care, health insurance, and a chance to explore and perhaps reach their potential instead of recriminations. I am hopeful that more organizations will awaken to the issues that need to be addressed and take immediate action to rectify the problems created by of all types of systemic discrimination.
