9/7/20 – Weekly Post: “Enjoying the Weekend? Thank a Union.”

“Enjoying the Weekend? Thank a Union.” is one of my favorite bumper stickers. Unfortunately, like many organizations, Unions often fall victim to individual ego, greed, and become driven by oligarchies that serve a privileged few at the expense of the majority. Members with the most benefits, highest salary and job security, often do little to protect the most vulnerable. In essence they perpetuate just another version of the inequality they initially organized to defeat. Another error has been neglecting the plight of the general population. This has made them vulnerable to political attacks and led to the loss of status and influence as the general public has developed an increasingly negative view of Unions. We need to return to the spirit and intent of Unions which was to create a just and equitable workplace for all, not just Union members. A “me first” mentality is not sustainable or ethical. Here is something to consider this Labor Day:
