So what would happen if I referred to a student in class or a colleague at work as “Buckwheat”? Of course I wouldn’t but there would be swift consequences and appropriately so. If we are in leadership roles it is incumbent upon us to be held to higher ethical standards. Promoting stereotypes and racist attitudes is not an acceptable way to garner votes. It is tragic that some of our political discourse, amplified by some media outlets, has turned into the equivalent of nasty game-shows featuring fearmongering and hate-talk. This only serves to divide us and increase violence. It is time to demand civil discourse from all. We owe it to each other.
