7/20/20 – Weekly Post: “Millionaires for Humanity”

I have said before I am willing to donate 5% of my annual salary towards a basic guaranteed income for all people, not just Americans but globally.  My stance has not changed. I am far from rich by US standards but my job compensates me well.  I have autonomy, a good salary, great health care and retirement benefits.  Right now I do not need more.  Sure I would like a better view, perhaps a “House Hunters” type of situation where I live on the ocean with a soaking tub in the bedroom (that’s sarcasm), but I am fortunate to have what I do.  Do I feel secure in the long-term…no.  When I eventually become ill will I have enough wealth to keep a decent apartment or home or will I end up in a low quality assisted living community?   As I sit in my solar powered and air conditioned apartment, my first experience ever with central air conditioning, I can’t help but think of the fate of so many around me who have far less and even more fear about the future particularly with the upheaval caused by the pandemic. Due to fear I am not as generous as I would like to be and that is the problem.  What if we were to share our fear collectively and understand that my fear is your fear and we can do something positive about it like provide a guarantee of basic security for all?  Real security, not the calculated “living wage” that is ridiculously low.  That security would include housing, quality affordable healthcare, food, and education to start. So let me pose a non-guilt/non-judgmental question: is it ethical or moral for us to accumulate wealth while hundreds of millions are living in poverty and despair?  This particular group, who has a lot of wealth,  has taken some action: https://www.millionairesforhumanity.com/
